It's often said imitation is the highest form of flattery, and for good reason. Whether we do it intentionally or not, we all choose people that we admire, inspire us or want to emulate.
For young people, role models are typically parents or teachers. Teens may also choose peers, musicians, or other celebrities. Once we reach adulthood, however, we may not be as actively choosing our role models as we should – although we may still emulate people here and there.
A great way to better achieve your goals is to learn from someone who has already mastered them.
My role models come from different places. Sometimes I try to learn from friends but often I look to people who I may not know personally, may have read about or learned about. Here are a just few of my role models.
The Optimist. This is a friend that always sees a bright side in every situation. Does he recognize when things are not perfect? Yes, always. Yet, he always focuses on the positive and always smiles. He is always pleasant to be around and positive attitude helps everyone when they are down.
The Socializer. This friend has lots friends. Where ever she goes there is a party around her. She’s the one that organizes reunions, stays in touch with everyone, and is generally nice. Everyone loves her.
The Juggler. This friend typically holds down 2-3 jobs and still has time for both family and friends. He is determined to succeed, but not at the cost of anything else. He does it all and does it all well.
The Strategist. This person is successful in planning her next career/business move and successfully executes the plan. She thinks three steps ahead and is ready for any challenge at any time.
Who can you look to as a role model? Role models are all around us. You can learn something from almost everyone, once you recognize their skills. It’s OK to let someone know you admire them and why, it is not OK to be so strong about it that you make them feel uncomfortable.
Write down three things about yourself you want to improve.

What can learn from them?
Keep in mind what works for one person does not always work for another. Sometimes you need to change things slightly or try a few different role models/behaviors to model before you find one that works.
