"If I knew then what I know now." How many times have I heard myself saying that. Wow, my life would have been so different if I knew all of those life lessons earlier. Sometimes I wish I could go back in time and give myself advice. But I can't and so I need to just keep going forward knowing that I have learned from all of my experiences - both good and bad.
What advice would you give your younger self?? Here’s my list (to start):
Everything Good and Bad is Temporary
Whatever we are dealing with, whatever we are worried about, will pass. That horrible feeling, whatever it is, will pass. Knowing that it is temporary helps to let it go. On the other hand, whatever we are celebrating will also pass. That happiness, euphoria we may be feeling, will also soon be over. So let the unhappy moments slide by and embrace the happy ones.
Don’t Compare Yourself to Others
When people show you who they are, they are typically showing you their best face. You aren’t seeing the issues they are dealing with behind closed doors. When I was younger I knew a family that seemed to have it all together. They were the model family; perfect couple, perfect kids, etc. I wanted to be just like them. Of course that’s what they showed on the outside. Out of nowhere (or so it seemed) the facade toppled like a house of cards – the marriage, the house, the business, it all fell apart. You really never know what’s going on with anyone – you only know what they show you.
There is Always a Bright Side
Even in the worst of situations, you can always find something positive to focus on. It may not make the situation better but then again there are some things you just can’t change. Focusing on something positive may not change the situation but may make it easier to live through it.
Surround Yourself with People Who Make You Happy
We are all sponges, soaking up whatever is happening around us. Being around people who are happy will make you happier in the long run. People who are negative will make you feel miserable.
Build Bridges Don’t Burn Bridges
Admittedly, I’ve learned this one the hard way. There is nothing good that can come from being mean and you never know when you will run into someone again. Let people remember you for being nice, even if the circumstances were not the best. In the long run you will feel better about yourself and others will feel better about you as well.
