5 Ways to Reduce Stress

Today we are getting lots of snow. The schools have been canceled and we are stuck at home. For some, this is a vacation day, a day to relax. For others, not being able to get out can cause stress. Being stressed from time to time is natural. How you handle the stress can make the big difference in the quality of your life.

If you ever feel stressed you are not alone! Stress a part of everyone’s life. Lately, it seems that people are more stressed than ever. This can be because of a number of reasons, but one thing is for sure. Left alone, too much stress can cause both physical and mental health problems. There are many things you can do to reduce stress and I’m sure you heard many of them before: exercise, laugh, drink tea, etc. Here are some more:

Stop Multitasking

Its so easy to get distracted. Sometimes it seems as though everyone is juggling very hectic schedules as well as feeling the need to respond to every text, tweet, Facebook post, email, and phone call immediately. Many feel as though we start a number of things and get nothing done. Instead of juggling, focus on getting one thing done at a time. When you complete one task, then move onto the next.

Take a Break From Technology Most of us spend too much time on technology. We are always on Facebook, twitter, texting, or just browsing. Take time away from technology. Put down the phone during dinner. Turn it off and have an undistracted conversation. If necessary, dedicate time to being disconnected.

Keep a To-do List

When you are overwhelmed because you have too much to do, stop and make a to-do list. Write down everything you need to do and then start to tackle things one at a time, starting with the most important items first.

Plan to Be Ready Early

If you plan to be ready early and something goes wrong you will still be ready on time. Sometimes all the planning in the world doesn’t work. If you are headed to work and stuck in traffic you may be late. But if you left 20 minutes early, you may still get there on time. Getting somewhere early in most cases is better than getting somewhere late – and its much less stressful. Aim for being early.

Stop and Breathe

Your body has natural ways of reducing stress and purposeful breathing is one of them. If you can, take a time out. Go outside. Sit in the sun. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, each time, breathing out slowly. Doing this for just a few minutes a day can not only reduce stress but it can also help you to refocus.

One Last Thought

Not everything works the same for everyone. Try each of these and see what works for you. If something works, make it part of your daily routine.
